About PL14-CE

PL14-CE is a specialist mist-applied treatment designed to work in conjunction with the XL-08 rust accelerator to refine, deepen, and control colour and texture development on Corten / Weathering steel and other carbon steels. Applied after the initial XL-08 application has dried, PL14-CE allows the oxidation process to be carefully managed over time, delivering consistent and repeatable aesthetic results.

PL14-CE is intended for professional use where precise control over accelerated corrosion processes and surface aesthetics is required, forming an integral part of the BROMOCO accelerated patina system.

The various finishes are achieved in 3 ways:

  1. Preparation of the metal. Raw, sand blasted, scrubbed or grinded.

  2. Length of time XL-08 and PL14-CE is left to dwell. Usually, 1 day to 10 days.

  3. Coating depth.

  • The lighter finishes are achieved when the surface has been sand or shot blasted.

  • The more textured finishes are achieved when the surface has been roughed or grinded.

  • The longer the XL-08 is reactivated with a PL14-CE solution the deeper the oxidisation.

  • Or the longer it is left to naturally rust up to 6 months.

  • Thicker coating or additional coats will increase the gloss level if desired.

F.A.Q.

How do you stop the patina process once the desired finish is achieved?

Once the required colour and texture have been achieved, the surface must be washed with ERW-BD. Do not rub the surface during washing. ERW-BD neutralises and halts the oxidation process, preventing further patina development and stabilising the finish.

What is PL14-CE used for?

PL14-CE is a controlled patina enhancement solution used in conjunction with XL-08. It is applied after the initial XL-08 application has dried to regulate, deepen, and refine the colour and surface texture of the developing rust patina. PL14-CE allows the oxidation process to be managed gradually rather than progressing too aggressively or unevenly.

Can the surface be sealed after using PL14-CE?

Yes. After neutralising with ERW-BD, the surface is ready for sealing. We recommend applying the CT7571 sealer to permanently stop further weathering and protect the finished patina from stains, abrasion, and environmental exposure.

When and how often should PL14-CE be applied?

PL14-CE should be applied only after an initial application of XL-08 has fully dried. It is then misted periodically—typically every two hours—to guide the development of the patina. If further oxidation is required, XL-08 can be reapplied after 24 hours, followed again by PL14-CE misting.

Does PL14-CE help achieve a more uniform finish?

Yes. One of the primary functions of PL14-CE is to provide greater control over patina evolution. By misting at controlled intervals, users can minimise patchiness, over-oxidation, and harsh texture changes, resulting in a more even, predictable, and repeatable finish.

Is PL14-CE suitable for Corten and other steels?

PL14-CE is designed for use on Corten / Weathering steel and is also suitable for mild steel and other carbon steels when used as part of the XL-08 accelerated rusting process.

Can PL14-CE be used on its own?

No. PL14-CE is not a standalone rust accelerator. It is intended to be used as part of the BROMOCO accelerated patina system, specifically in combination with XL-08. XL-08 initiates rapid oxidation, while PL14-CE refines and controls the ongoing development.
